What is Dental Botox? (Cosmetic & Therapeutic Uses)
Botox, derived from botulinum toxin, is widely known for its cosmetic applications, but it also offers significant therapeutic benefits, particularly when administered by trained dental professionals. At Granville Station Dental, we utilize Botox for two primary purposes:
Cosmetic Botox: To soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles and fine lines around the face, often caused by repeated muscle movements like smiling or frowning. Common treatment areas include forehead lines, crow’s feet (around the eyes), and frown lines (between the eyebrows). It can also be used cosmetically to address a “gummy smile.”
Therapeutic Botox: To relax specific muscles that contribute to pain and dysfunction. In dentistry, this is most commonly used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, teeth grinding (bruxism), and associated headaches or facial pain.
Our Vancouver dentists will conduct a thorough consultation to understand your goals and determine if cosmetic or therapeutic Botox is the right solution for you.
Conditions Treated with Dental Botox in Vancouver
Leveraging their extensive knowledge of facial muscles and structures, our dentists can use Botox to effectively address several conditions:
- TMJ Disorders & Bruxism (Teeth Grinding/Clenching): By injecting Botox into the large jaw muscles (masseters), we can reduce their intensity. This often significantly alleviates TMJ pain, jaw soreness, headaches, and minimizes damage caused by involuntary grinding or clenching, protecting your teeth from excessive wear.
- Gummy Smile Correction: For individuals whose upper lip elevates significantly when smiling, revealing excessive gum tissue, Botox can be strategically placed to relax the elevator muscles, resulting in a lower lip line and a more balanced smile aesthetic without invasive surgery.
- Cosmetic Enhancement (Fine Lines & Wrinkles): Botox effectively smooths dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle activity, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. This provides a refreshed, more youthful appearance while maintaining natural facial expression when administered correctly.

What to Expect During Your Botox Treatment
Your journey with Botox at Granville Station Dental typically involves:
- Consultation: A discussion with one of our trained dentists about your concerns, goals, and medical history. We’ll assess your facial muscles and determine the appropriate dosage and injection sites.
- The Treatment: The procedure itself is quick, often taking only 15-25 minutes. Using a very fine needle, the dentist will inject small amounts of Botox into the targeted muscles. Most patients report minimal discomfort, often described as a slight pinch.
- Aftercare: There is typically no downtime required after Botox injections. You can usually return to your daily activities immediately. We will provide specific aftercare instructions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise or rubbing the treated areas for a short period.
- Results: Therapeutic effects for TMJ/bruxism may start within a few days to a week. Cosmetic results typically become noticeable within 3-6 days, with full effects apparent around 10-14 days. Results generally last for 3-4 months, after which follow-up treatments can maintain the effects.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Botox treatment take, and what is involved?
A Botox treatment usually takes between 15 and 25 minutes and won’t require anesthesia. Botox is injected into specific muscles using a fine needle. Topical anesthesia may be used to numb the area.
Is Botox safe?
Our authorized prescribers are familiar with the relevant anatomy. They will employ measures associated with the safe, effective use of BOTOX, which includes properly storing the product, choosing the correct dose and properly administering the dose using specific techniques. Our clinicians will provide patient-specific care. For your safety, they may ask about any alterations to the anatomy including prior surgical procedures.
How long does a Botox treatment last?
Generally, Botox treatments last 3-5 months, depending on how it’s metabolized by the individual.
What is included with the first consultation?
At your first consultation, your dentist will conduct a comprehensive facial and/or dental assessment and recommend the optimal treatments to achieve your goals. If they determine that you are a candidate for Botox, your treatment appointment will be scheduled.
Is there anything I should do to prepare for treatment?
Yes. You’ll need to avoid alcohol starting about one week before the procedure. We also recommend that you cease taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising.
What are the risks associated with Botox?
While side effects from Botox are rare, they are typically mild and transient. They may include:
- Headache or flu-like symptoms/li>
- Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site
- Crooked smile or drooling
- Droopy eyelid or eyebrows
- Eye dryness or excessive tearing
If you do experience more than mild side effects that last hours to weeks after receiving Botox, call us immediately.
Who should avoid Botox treatment?
The following people should avoid Botox treatments::
- People who have previously had an allergic reaction to Botulinum toxin type A injections.
- People with muscle problems or chronic diseases affecting the muscles.
- Children under the age of 18 years.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- People with infection at the proposed injection site.
What are the recommendations for aftercare?
- Try to contract the treated muscle areas periodically for up to four hours after treatment, by frowning and lifting eyebrows to allow the toxin to reach all of the treated muscle.
- Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas and avoid having facials and massages for 48 hours to ensure that the treatment remains at the site of injection.
- Avoid vigorous exercise and alcohol-based products on the area treated for 48 hours.
